The trade-offs
| Combo | Dedicated pair | |
|---|---|---|
| Floor space | One frame, but often 55 to 65 in wide | Two frames, each about 26 to 30 in wide |
| Cost | One machine | Two machines |
| Users at once | One | Two |
| Changeover | Swivel pads or flip a lever | No changeover needed |
| Maintenance | One stack, one set of cables | Two of each |
| Supersets | Changeover between every set | Step from one machine to the other |
| Best for | Homes, studios, PT clinics, hotels | Clubs, universities, team facilities |
When a combo wins
For home gyms, studios and most clinics, a combo is the obvious choice: one purchase, one delivery, one footprint and both directions. Combos like the Body-Solid GIOT-STK and BodyKore GR632 train both directions from one seated position. The Nautilus Inspiration adds 5 lb add-on steps for clinical progressions.
Body-Solid GIOT-STK
210 lb standard, 310 lb option · 63 x 65 in
BodyKore GR632
220 lb · 70 x 39 in
Nautilus Inspiration IPAA5
200 lb (91 kg) · 56 x 55 in
When dedicated machines win
On a busy floor the hip machines can queue at peak hours, and every changeover on a combo costs time. Two dedicated machines let two members train at once and make supersets easy. They also fit along a wall: the Hammer Strength Select abductor is 26 in wide and the Precor Resolute inner thigh machine is 30 in wide.
Hammer Strength Select HS-HAB
295 lb (138 kg) · 61 x 26 in
Cybex Prestige VRS Hip Abduction
Selectorized stack (size not confirmed) · 58 in tall
Precor Resolute RSL0620
200 lb (91 kg) · 71 x 30 in
Mix and match
Dedicated machines do not have to come from the same brand. A facility can pair a Hammer Strength abductor with a Precor inner thigh machine, for example, as long as the footprints and finishes suit the floor.
How we evaluate
We rank by use case, not with star scores. Every pick has to win on the criteria below for the job it is recommended for.
- Published specs onlyStack weight, increments, dimensions, live area, machine weight and user rating, taken from the manufacturer or an authorized seller and dated. We have not tested these machines and we do not invent test results, scores or ratings.
- Unconfirmed means unconfirmedWhen sources disagree or a figure is not published, we say "Not confirmed" instead of guessing.
- Fit before featuresCeiling height, width with the arms open and live area decide more purchases than any feature list, so they carry the most weight.
- AdjustabilityHow the start position is set, how the machine switches direction and how small the weight jumps are.
- Warranty in writingWe point you to the seller's warranty page, because home and commercial terms differ and change.
- Fit over commissionSome machines link to Amazon, where we may earn a commission. Dealer-only machines earn us nothing, and we still recommend them where they fit best.
Frequently asked questions
Is a combo abductor machine as good as a dedicated one?
For most users, yes. The differences are throughput, changeover time and the specific start-position mechanisms, not the training effect.
How much space do two dedicated machines need?
The dedicated machines with confirmed footprints here are 26 to 30 in wide each. Allow space between them for access; published live areas, such as Hammer Strength's 77 in, are the best guide.
